New Job

I’m currently finishing up school, actually, I’m pretty much finished school. During one of my last classes (UNIX Operating Systems) my instructor was reviewing my exam and out of no where said “Walter, are you looking for a job?” Well I thought he was kidding around until later I emailed him only to find out that he wasn’t. Long story short, I’m now employed at my school as a part-time worker in the Web Services department. I will pretty much be picking up the excess work that the other two full time employees can’t handle. We will be responsible for the College’s Web Site and possibly the web servers too. I’m going to have to freshen up on my PHP/SQL skills.

Everything came out of no where and happened really fast but needless to say I’m very excited. I will be joining my other two co-workers in the same office (where we actually have two big windows, whereas many other offices don’t have any!) and I get my very own 20” 2.66GHz iMac. I may also be dealing with some slight Administration with some basic shell scripts and what not. It seems like a very laid back environment where things run smoothly and nothing is rushed.

I showed up today to hand in some final paperwork without knowing if I was actually hired and what my pay rate would be. Well I ended up working for 2 hours (taking a tour of the campus, the server room, and the help desk area) where I was given an account for their ticket system and already had a ticket to work on. One of the PHP forms isn’t submitting for the library which I think is a phpmailer or sendmail error. I also found my pay rate is 50% more then what I make now, so that’s pretty nice. My instructor / now co-worker was actually trying to get me close to double what I’m making now. I’m happy either way because the experience is worth it alone for me. Really, the only down side to all of this is that it’s temporary. Yeah, he said it’s only for 6 months but he said that it’s quite a long time and you never know what’s going to happen in that time frame. I could end up as a full-time employee for all I know.
